From rates to services to the loft of a pillow, lodging options offer an overwhelming variety of features to choose from. The same holds true when lodging goes green.
Typical eco-friendly hotel features range from tiny ones such as energy-efficient light bulbs and in-room recycling to corporate-wide energy and water conservation programs and LEED-certified buildings. As well as natural environments, local communities and economies are highly impacted by the industry. Hospitality was one of the first fields to demonstrate that going green could be highly marketable by promoting the concept of eco-tourism, not to mention the commonsense idea of using linens more than once before they’re washed. At the same time, the industry is awash in do-good value statements and green-branding gimmickry with little substance behind them.

Help Is On Its Way
Right now, there is no LEED-like ratings system for the hospitality industry. But not for long, thanks to the Tourism Sustainability Council, a project developed by travel- and environmental-related organizations working for the past year to develop Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria, sustainable standards for tourism businesses and accreditation for certification programs. Initiated by a group including Rainforest Alliance, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), United Nations Foundation and United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), it was launched at the 2008 World Conservation Congress and has since grown to include more than 40 members.
The criteria development steering committee includes environmental organizations such as Rainforest Alliance and the National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations, plus travel-industry entities such as the American Hotel & Lodging Assn., American Society of Travel Agents, International Hotel & Restaurant Assn., Sustainable Travel International and online travel companies Expedia and Travelocity.
Travelocity and Expedia already offer “eco-friendly” designations in search results based on reputable third-party certification programs such as those by Rainforest Alliance, Energy Star and Green Key. Both have announced plans to list only Global Sustainable Tourism certified properties on their green search results beginning this month.

Green Lodging at Greenbuild
As with any product or service, final judgment of the “greenness” of a given hotel or other lodging choice is subjective. To help narrow lodging choices for Greenbuild attendees staying in the metro Phoenix area, we’ve developed a Green Trip Grid on Lodging that includes major hotel chains with green travel programs, plus some alternative properties worthy of consideration. We’ve also included distance to Greenbuild, and estimated travel times using public transportation.
You’ll find we’ve included properties that are not in the neighborhood of the Phoenix Civic Plaza, as staying within walking distance may not fit the travel plans of all. Where we’ve listed properties more than 5 miles from the conference site, we’ve tried to include only those located in pedestrian-friendly neighborhoods with good access to dining, entertainment and public transportation. To plan routes and travel time in advance, use Valley Metro’s amazingly simple Transit Trip Planner, available here http://tripplan.phoenix.gov.

Michèle Van Haecke is a freelance journalist covering sustainability, architecture, interior design and the construction industry in Arizona and the Southwest.

The GreenBuild 2009 Host Committee has partnered with the City of Phoenix,

AZ Countdown to Greenbuild Blog Series "Greening Your Trip "

Eco-Conscious Travel Tips for Greenbuild 2009

By Michèle Van Haecke

Arizona-Based Freelance Journalist

Unless you’re the world–record power-walker or some sort of recon commando, hoofing it is probably not the way you plan to get to Phoenix for Greenbuild ’09.

Travel by air remains the most convenient and practical mode of transportation if you’ve got many miles to go. But the environmental impacts can make eco-minded travelers queasy.

According to the United Nations International Panel on Climate Change, airlines are responsible for 2 percent of Co2 emissions worldwide. This is the estimate you’re most likely to find in news reports and conversations about airline industry emissions, but levels vary by study and organization. The average American trip abroad once or twice a year emits 19,841 pounds of CO2, according to a recent report by Best Foot Forward, an environmental watchdog group based in the UK. That’s significantly more than the 14,000 pounds the typical Yank generates driving for an entire year.

The evils of emissions are compounded by other effects of air travel. Contrails, the condensed exhaust left in the wake of a plane, act as clouds, trapping heat from the earth’s atmosphere. While these vapors reflect some of the sun’s heat during the day, at night they act like a globe-warming blanket. Flight distance, stops, circling and taxiing all contribute to the problem. Add to these conservative estimates placing the rate of passenger travel growth at about 5 percent a year.
Whatever the numbers, the problem is serious enough that the International Air Transport Assn. promised to halve net C02 emissions by 2050 and be carbon neutral by 2020 at a September meeting of the United Nations. Many major carriers have launched environmental programs with emissions as a primary target. The most popular – and publicized -- tactic is to offer carbon offsets, financial donations made by flyers to organizations working to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. The amount is typically calculated by using an online carbon footprint calculator that determines how much C02 will be generated by a given flight, then selecting a suitable organization. Many airlines and online travel sites incorporate this procedure as a ticketing option, often dubbed “green fare,” and provide a list of organizations pre-selected for viability and authenticity. Third-party organizations such as Sustainable Travel International, Carbon Fund and Terra Pass also offer calculators and organization certification. See our Carbon Offset Programs list for links.

Other tips for flying green:

Fly direct. Fuel is burned at a much higher rate during take-off and landing that when cruising. Besides, how much time do you really want to spend at the airport Starbucks anyway?

Combine trips. You’ve already come all the way to Arizona from Poughkeepsie or Kalamazoo. If you do business in the Southwest, the Rocky Mountain states or on the West Coast, extend your stay and make a sweep of the region.

Pack light. The heavier the airplane, the more emissions it spews. As a bonus, you’ll save on bag fees.

Be picky about choosing an airline. Check out our Green Trip Grid on Green Air Travel to compare eco-friendly features of airlines and online travel sites.

If you’d rather go by ground, you may want to check out:

www.Amtrak.com. Congratulate yourself.

If that doesn’t quite satisfy your eco-conscience, never fear. As with architectural design and construction, travel’s gone green.

It’s only natural that travelers planning on attending the USGBC Greenbuild Conference & Expo in Phoenix, Arizona, this year are particularly interested in the environmental impacts they create when on the move. Carbon emissions, energy use, economic leakage, those $5 plastic bottles of water on the hotel nightstand. These and more have gained attention as environmental evils generated by travel, whether for business or pleasure.

The good news is there are as many ways to lower negative travel impacts as there are fun things to do in Arizona. Stay at a green hotel. Eat at local, green restaurants or from neighborhood markets. Hop on the Valley of the Sun’s new light rail to get around or rent a bike. Gotta fly to Phoenix? Offset carbon emissions through donation to one of hundreds of reputable organizations working to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions. Better yet, slow down, combine business with pleasure and make Arizona your vacation destination.

Tripping Green at Greenbuild
AZ’s Countdown to Greenbuild, part of the USGBC Arizona Chapter’s Greenbuild Host Committee, has the inside track on how to green your trip. We’ve pooled the knowledge and experience of local, eco-minded Arizonans for recommendations on everything from green lodging to public transportation to where to find locally sourced, Vegan hot wings served with compostable flatware. (No kidding. Find out where in our Green Trip Grid on Green Dining.)
Visit the Countdown to Greenbuild blog, Facebook page, LinkedIn group or Twitter account for green trip tips and feature stories on visiting Arizona. Some of what you’ll find:
-Green air travel.
-Arizona public and alternative transportation.
-Where to stay.
-Where to eat.
-Interesting, educational or just plain fun stuff to do while in AZ.

We’ll also provide information on more imaginative ways to go green in Arizona, such as staying in a walkable neighborhood, visiting our natural wonders, learning about our ancient Native American cultures, greening your conference experience and more. Even how to see Grand Canyon in an eco-friendly way.

Green Trip Grids
“Green” means different things to different travelers. To one, “green dining” includes a LEED-certified building, eco-friendly cleaning products and a biodiesel oil-recycling program. To another, it’s locally sourced produce, community outreach and vegan fare. With this in mind, tips and recommendations will be presented in Green Trip Grids, a flexible format cross-referencing typical and not-so-typical green features with airlines, lodging, restaurants and other options. We’ll present suggestions in an at-a-glance grid and leave the definitions and decisions up to you.

Like our Greening Your Trip features, Green Trip Grids will be accessible before and during Greenbuild at the AZ Countdown to Greenbuild blog, Facebook and LinkedIn pages and through Twitter. We’ll also make them available to mobile devices and as PDFs.

If you’re a resident or fan of the Grand Canyon State and have suggestions you don’t see in our stories, please share. If Arizona’s a brand new adventure for you, we hope our Greening Your Trip guides and stories help make your visit successful, enjoyable and unforgettable. Conference. See attached link to download the full tours list. There are going to be half day tours as well as full day tours to Central, Northern and Southern Arizona! The list includes an array of amazing projects such as the new Tempe Transit Center, the Phoenix Convention Center, several NAU (Northern Arizona University) buildings, and the Biosphere in Southern Arizona!

Over the weeks ahead, expect to see more information on the individual tours as we highlight the tour offerings that will represent Arizona on the international stage. I will also keep you posted on when you can start to sign up for tours!

“We are grateful to the many teams that submitted project tour proposals for evaluation and appreciate all their time,” said Dorina Bustamante, Host Committee Member and Tours Subcommittee Chair. “The response was outstanding. Reviewing so many quality proposals leaves a distinct impression that Arizona has a great deal of insight to offer on the topic of sustainable living.”

The tours committee deliberated over 92 proposals before assembling 18 tours for recommendation to the national US Green Building Council for approval. The proposals included a variety of green building projects in residential and commercial architecture and some Arizona landmarks that were important to the history of sustainable development. The final selection was bound by a limited number of available tours and the need to consider each tour site in conjunction with other tour offerings.

'Green' economy sprouts new benefits for Arizona

by Bonnie Richardson - May. 3, 2009
Special for the Republic

Editor's note: First in a monthly series on "building green" in advance of the upcoming 2009 Greenbuild International Conference & Expo in Phoenix.

Ready for good news? Arizona has been quietly engaged in the new green economy since 2001 when a handful of people joined together to spur innovation and ingenuity in the design and construction of green buildings.
And it's really paying off for our state.

In just eight years, our Arizona chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council has grown to more than 1,200 members who represent every facet of the built environment, from architects to xeriscapers. They know that what we build matters.
In the United States alone, buildings account for 72 percent of our electricity consumption and 38 percent of all carbon-dioxide emissions. Working together, Arizona's advocates for a green economy are advancing practical and effective solutions to offset adverse environmental impacts.
When our chapter was organized, Arizona had just one building certified under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, rating system that is used to assess green-building practices. Today, we have 52 LEED-certified projects and 355 LEED-registered projects that are advancing toward this certification. The impact for our green economy is tremendous.
Our cities are helping drive this change. In 2005, Scottsdale was the first city in the nation to adopt a policy to construct its buildings to achieve a LEED Gold Certification level.
In 2006, Phoenix adopted the policy that new city-owned buildings must meet the requirements of LEED-certified ratings, and that same year, Tucson committed itself to constructing city-owned buildings to LEED Silver standards.
Recently, Tempe made history by constructing the new Tempe Transportation Center, which is one of the most energy-efficient buildings in the nation. The project stars a three-story, 40,000-square-foot office and retail complex, which is also a bus and light-rail hub. It's designed to be 52 percent more energy-efficient than traditionally constructed buildings and has the first vegetated desert green roof on a commercial building in our state.
Like the Transportation Center roof, decisions to go green usually start at the top. As more businesses factor in the savings in water and energy costs that these buildings deliver, corporations and entrepreneurs alike are realizing it makes good financial sense to adopt a green approach.
This November will be a milestone for our state as it plays host to the prestigious 2009 Greenbuild International Conference & Expo. It is expected to bring 30,000 professionals to Phoenix in the fields of construction, energy, community planning, product development, sustainability and other related fields to hear top international speakers and see the latest technology.
Being chosen to host Greenbuild '09 confirms that our state is recognized for its leadership in green building. All this action indicates that we are at a tipping point where sustainable practices and building green are becoming mainstream.

Bonnie Richardson is chairperson, Arizona chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council, www.usgbcaz.org.

Link to Article: http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/viewpoints/articles/2009/05/02/20090502richardson03.html

Greenbuild Tours Moving Closer Toward Selection

The entire statewide Greenbuild Tours committee extends a thank you to everyone that submitted an application and YouTube upload in response to the Arizona tours call for entries. The amount of submissions was overwhelming and sets the bar very high for future Greenbuild conferences! There was a breadth and depth of projects from ancient, to vintage, to contemporary and into the future. The community at large should feel very proud to have such tremendous examples of true sustainability in our neighborhoods.

Due to the enormous amount of submissions, final organization of the statewide tours is still currently in progress. In an effort to maintain communication with the community, following is the skinny on where the Tours committee is to date in the judging process:

• Th-04-16: Each submission was compiled into a scorecard for the Host committee's preliminary vote.
• Fri-04-17: Tours committee members from Phoenix, Flagstaff and Tucson convened for 14 hours to review and score every single submission.
• Sun-04-19: The highest rated projects were presented to the Host and Executive committees for their approval.
• Mon-04-20: USGBC National offered their first review of tours with projects agreed upon by the Tours, Host and Executive committees.
• Wed-04-22: Steering committee reviewed, critiqued and voted to approve 18 tours between Phoenix, Flagstaff and Tucson with the recommendation to map the travel time between each project site and confirm individual project details.
• Week of 04-27: Tours committee confirming logistics and details of each individual project, then obtain final approval by USGBC National.
• Week of 05-04: Announce the final tours with project sites to the public via press release and post to usgbcaz.org and LinkedIn.
The submitter for each individual finalist project site will be contacted directly. The Greenbuild Tours committee looks forward to announcing the final tours for Greenbuild 2009.

Calling All Students & Young Professionals! In keeping with the 2009 conference theme of Greenbuild, Main Street Green: Connect to the Conversation, the committee is seeking both LEED Certified and non-LEED projects that represent a diverse cross-section of projects that most truly exhibit innovative environmentally sustainable design, planning and construction projects. From Ancient, to Vintage, to Contemporary and into Tomorrow – the Greenbuild Tours committee is tasked with the challenge to identify, cultivate, exhibit, and archive as many of the most relevant projects in the state as possible. The ideal projects sought are among those that educate, peak interest, initiate dialogue, contribute to the community, are deserving of recognition and are celebrated Arizona treasures.

* Applicants responding to this call for entries must carefully follow the submittal criteria on pages 2-5 and adhere to the four (4) mandatory and two (2) optional steps within this style of Web 2.0 call for entries. We are requesting a comprehensive multi-media package (from those that are able) of applicant information so we may have the opportunity to highlight and promote a diverse cross-section of projects that most truly exhibit innovative environmentally sustainable design, planning and construction. No project submittal meeting all six (6) Application Submittal Steps will be denied recognition in the Greenbuild Virtual Tours, unless components are incomplete or unusable due to technical glitches. Each completed submittal is valued as significant to Arizona history and will be included into a comprehensive database of video archives with supporting documents and images that will be managed by the USGBC Arizona Chapter. Approximately 15-20 Physical Tours composed of 2-4 projects will be selected throughout Northern, Central and Southern Arizona and offered as official Greenbuild Tours.

Beth Vershure Joins Greenbuild 09 as Arizona Host Committee Executive Director

The Arizona Chapter of the USGBC is building awareness of green building and laying groundwork for a successful Greenbuild event.
